The Wonderful Whirl Story
My name is Danielle and I am a graphic designer, drummer, human-mom, dog-mom, wife, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, granddaughter, friend, etc.
If you know me in real life as any of the above, then you know my passion for design and my love of all things fun and beautiful. If you don’t know me in real life, you will see this passion on the pages of this website and in the products that are provided to you.
How it Started
The idea for this company was born with a simple thought that turned into a brainstorm that flourished into a goal with a plan. I wanted to create custom animal alphabet flashcards for my son as I was not finding any that were currently in the market that appealed to my taste or style.
It may seem silly to some to consider the parent’s opinion when it comes to the visual appeal of a child’s product, but I feel like it’s silly to not consider it! As a graphic designer with over a decade of experience in the design industry, I knew that it was possible to create a design that is both engaging and fun for kids while maintaining a level of style that can still be attractive in an adult home. (If I pushed you out of me and feed you with my body, I think it’s okay if I have a say in what the flash cards look like.)
A Labor of Love
I spent over a week designing the flashcards in the time between putting my son to bed and going to bed myself. During this time I had a thought: if I’m going so out of the way to create these flashcards as an alternative to the existing selection in the market for my child, there are certainly other parents who would appreciate having another option for their children too!
The Animal Alphabet Flashcards were the first products I created followed by the matching poster. I fell in love with the idea of providing beautiful and thoughtfully designed items for children and their parents or caretakers, so I kept going!
Why “Wonderful Whirl?”
The name for the company, Wonderful Whirl, LLC, is a play on the name of the song by Louis Armstrong. My dad, Rick, would belt out “What a Wonderful World” and he sounded just like Satchmo! Sadly, my dad passed away unexpectedly in 2011. I hope that in paying homage to his energetic spirit through the company name, and in working hard for this company like he did for his business as a tile contractor, I can keep his love alive in a small way while bringing joy to others in the process.
