Easy & Delicious Shakshuka Recipe

shakshuka in pan poached eggs tomato sauce cheese herbs and spices breakfast dish

With it’s rich, albeit disputed history and many sauce variations, this shakshuka dish is an interesting and delicious take on a breakfast (or anytime) meal!

What is Shakshuka (and why is it so great)?

Shakshuka (also spelled “shakshouka”) is a dish made up of poached eggs in a flavorful tomato sauce. The great thing about this recipe is it can easily be adjusted to your taste! If you want it to be sweeter, add a little more sugar. Spicier, throw in some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes in addition to the chili powder. If you want to substitute other herbs and seasonings for the cilantro like parsley or mint, that will be delicious too! Throw in some potatoes, anchovies, artichokes, olives, whatever you like! Shakshuka can be as simple or complex as you’d like and it will always be a delicious and robust dish that is an obvious crowd pleaser.

Ingredients:

  • Diced Tomatoes (one 28oz can)
  • Eggs (4)
  • Feta Crumbles (½ cup)
  • Bell Pepper (1)
  • Yellow Onion (1)
  • Garlic (4 cloves)
  • Olive Oil (1 tbsp)
  • Paprika (1 tsp)
  • Cumin (1 tsp)
  • Ground Coriander (1 tsp)
  • Chili Powder (¼ tsp)
  • Granulated Sugar (½ tsp)
  • Fresh Cilantro (½ bunch chopped)
  • Salt + Pepper

Instructions:

Dice the bell pepper and onion and chop the garlic cloves (or use a garlic press). In a large sauté pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat and add the diced onion and bell pepper until the onion is translucent.

Add the garlic and spices and cook for another minute stirring constantly. (Be careful to not burn the garlic!)

Pour the can of diced tomatoes with the juice into the pan and add the sugar and salt + pepper to taste. Bring it to a simmer and let cook for 8 minutes. Make little bowl-shaped holes in the sauce and crack an egg directly into each space. Cover pan and cook for 5-8 minutes.

Top with chopped cilantro and feta crumbles and serve with toasted ciabatta for dipping.
